Need something a little less stressful to play with? Full scale car getting you down? Want to have some fun with the kids? There is always Radio Controlled cars!. No I am not talking about the wimpy slow ones you can buy at your local Walmart, I am talking the more expensive kits by companies like Tamiya, HPI and Kyosho. We are going to take a moment to give some intro information to the hobby.
Getting into it
Getting into the hobby of radio controlled can be either very cheap or very expensive depending on how you go about it. The more common scale is 1/10 and from there you can go smaller to 1/18, 1/24 or bigger up to 1/5. RC cars are fun to tinker with on a weekend or a weekday at your local parking lot, also fun with the kids. Setting up a R/C car (depending on the chassis) can be like setting up a real racecar adjusting your toe, camber, ride height and downforce which gives kids a great understanding of Racecar engineering.
Starting out
If it’s your first time getting into the hobby we recommend starting off with a RTR (Ready-to-Run) RC electric kit that can be purchased for around $200 to $250 which includes everything you need to run out of the box. Other models come in kits and need to be put together but most of the time require you to purchase your Radio and Receiver separately.
Starting out electric is the best choice. You can also get into Gas (Nitro) powered R/C cars which cost a little more but give a little bit more fun as these cars are powered by single cylinder 2-stroke engines.
Choosing a kit
Tamiya and HPI have wonderful kits that are high quality and both offer Ready-to-Run models. Tamiya’s TT-01 chassis is a great starting point. A shaft driven 4WD car, the TT-01 is a little heavier than it’s hardcore race-car brothers the TB01 or TL01. Most kits by these manufacturers have “Hop-Up” parts for various models to make your car a little bit quicker. For electric and nitro there is a wide range of options then the stock out of the box motors but your local hobby shop can help you there.
Go out and have fun
This hobby is fun, whether you are a full-scale tuner, mechanic or just have a auto inspired soul it offers great enjoyable entertainment especially if you can get some friends together and run!.
Remember, most of the time the batteries are not included!
